In the Words of Ned Bachus’ Readers

“I will offer this fervent hope that every faculty member at every community college will read Open Admissions. First a disclosure: I am a friend and former colleague of Ned Bachus. That said, I will offer this fervent hope that every faculty member at every community college will read Open Admissions. Ned interweaves a month of reflective writing in Ireland during a sabbatical with a fall 2011 teaching semester, perhaps his last as a professor, along with stops at his rich inner life, and creates a tapestry that illuminates the wonder of the teaching/learning process for both his students and himself. Having been a community college student himself and an extraordinarily student-focused teacher, Ned is keenly aware of the difficulties his students encounter, and Open Admissions explores those difficulties, both personal and academic, sometimes overcome, sometimes not, with wisdom and grace. Open Admissions provides a blueprint for academically responsible and compassionate teaching of what is most certainly an essential and under considered cohort of college students. It is also an exploration of a talented man assessing his personal and professional life. Open Admissions is an A+ in my grade book.”
